Review: 31 Dream Street – Lisa Jewell

Lisa Jewell has quickly become one of the names in chick-lit (short hand for girly romance books!) in the UK. Her stories grab your imagination, and don’t seem too far fetched, unlike some books of this kind.
I picked up “31 dream street” in a second hand bookshop on a recent trip to London. I wanted something to read on the train home that wasn’t going to tax my brain too much.
What do your neighbours do?
“31 dream street” tells the story of Toby and Leah. Opposite neighbours for 3 years, it takes an accident before they speak to each other and realise how much they have in common.
Meet Toby
Toby is a poet. He lives in a beautiful, if unkempt, large house with various waifs and strays he’s picked up along the years. People with dreams and stories of their own. But toby gets a letter, his father, who gave him the house 15 years ago is coming to London and feels that they should meet. This sends toby into a tailspin – what has he achieved with his life? What will his father make of him?
Meet Leah
Leah works in the pink hummingbird – a girly, pink, gift shop. But it’s not where she saw herself either. She lives with Amitabh, an affable Indian nurse whom she loves dearly. But when she is confronted by mortality their relationship is put to the test.
This is one of those books that is perfect for lazy summer days, I imagine it is perfect beach or pool reading. There is something inherently comforting about the story, and it really makes you believe in old fashioned goodness.
